On November 19, Tianjin University held a "Seminar on Developing First-class Chemistry" both online and offline simultaneously.
Executive Vice President Hu Wenping gave a presentation on “developing first-class chemistry”. He elaborated on the general situation of the first-class chemistry development in terms of discipline layout, achievements and shortcomings of the first-round development, outcomes in 2022 and development plan in 2023.
Vice President Zheng Gang pointed out that chemistry, as an important part in Tianjin University’s development, has been selected as one of the first "double first-class" chemistry by the Ministry of Education and the second round of first-class disciplines. Tianjin University attaches great importance to the development of chemistry and hopes that experts give valuable suggestions on developing first-class chemistry, to promote new headways at Tianjin University.
Attendees had a heated discussion about the development of first-class chemistry. They fully affirmed the achievements in the first construction cycle (2017-2021) and the opening year of the second cycle (2022). On the basis of the achievements, many constructive and valuable suggestions were put forward. The experts unanimously agreed that it’s essential to put talent cultivation in the first place and intensify our efforts to actively meet social needs and improve the quality of talent cultivation. By means of Tianjin University’s advantages in engineering, it’s imperative to further integrate science and engineering and create more opportunities for disciplinary development. Besides, to meet major strategic needs of our country, it’s of great importance to tackle some bottlenecks in preliminary science and promote original and pioneering research. Thus, Tianjin University can form its own disciplinary characteristics with the label of“Tianjin University's Chemistry”and continuously improve the influence of chemistry at home and abroad.
After the meeting,academic leaders of chemistry held a lively discussion in response to the suggestions offered by experts and drew up their plans for the direction of research teams respectively.
The seminar invited Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences including Academicians Tian He, Xie Yi, Zhao Yuliang, Xu Chunming, Bu Xianhe and other experts and professors of chemistry from other universities to share their views. It was also attended by Hu Wenping, Executive Vice President of Tianjin University, Zheng Gang, Vice President of Tianjin University, He Fang, Vice Dean of the School of Graduates of Tianjin University, and more than 40 pioneers in chemistry,academic backbone and young teachers from Tianjin University. The meeting was hosted by Geng Yanhou, Dean of the School of Science.
