On November 21, 2025, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the list of newly elected academicians for 2025. Hu Wenping, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee of Tianjin University, Executive Vice President of Tianjin University, and Chair Professor in the School of Science, was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Biography

Hu Wenping was born in May 1970 and is a member of the Communist Party of China. He has long been devoted to research in the physical chemistry of organic semiconductors and is one of China's leading academic figures in organic semiconductor crystal engineering and field-effect transistor device physics. He received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Hunan University in 1993. He then received his master's and doctoral degrees from the Institute of Metal Research and the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively. He conducted collaborative research at Osaka University in Japan and the University of Stuttgart in Germany. In 2003, he was selected for the CAS "Hundred Talents Program" and returned to China to devote himself to scientific research.

Since 2013, Professor Hu has worked at Tianjin University, successively serving as Assistant to the President, Dean of the School of Science, and Vice President. Since 2021, he has served as Executive Vice President, while remaining on the front lines of teaching and research. Targeting "organic integrated circuits," a major frontier of science and technology, Hu established a distinctive research system centered on "high-mobility materials–organic semiconductor crystals–high-performance physical devices." He was the first internationally to carry out research on organic semiconductor micro/nanocrystal field-effect transistors and organic semiconductor two-dimensional crystals, leading research on high-mobility organic semiconductor materials and high-performance organic field-effect transistors. He led his team to a series of original achievements in the design and synthesis of new organic polymer optoelectronic functional materials and in the relationship between condensed-state structure and properties.

Professor Hu has published more than 580 journal papers, including 3 in Nature, 1 in Science, 3 in Nat. Mater., 2 in Nat. Rev. Mater., 1 in Nat. Chem., 1 in Nat. Photon., 1 in Nat. Sustain., 14 in Nat. Commun., 7 in Sci. Adv., 3 in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 1 in Phys. Rev. Lett., 38 in J. Am. Chem. Soc., 53 in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 129 in Adv. Mater., and 49 in the Science China series journals. His papers have received more than 44,000 SCI citations by others (H-index 118). He has obtained 36 granted patents and edited four monographs in Chinese, including Organic Field-Effect Transistors and Organic Optoelectronics. As the first contributor, he has received two Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award; one Special Prize and one First Prize of the Tianjin Natural Science Award; the Third National Innovation and Advancement Award; a Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award; and honors including Outstanding Supervisor from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and Tianjin, and National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Supervisor.

He serves as the leader of an Innovative Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Director of the Key Laboratory of Organic Integrated Circuits of the Ministry of Education, and Executive Director of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Sensing Functional Materials.
